Here is a quick guide for all those who are on MAC. I guess they are the lucky ones to start with. The Dev Team just announced a new and a different way of unlocking your locked iPhone 3GS and 3G on Basebands 05.14.02 and 05.15.04. You can read the full story here before proceeding to know the out comes and possible risks.

This guide works both on iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 so feel free to use the version you like. But, it doesn’t really matter what you use, your baseband will be upgraded anyway. So use whatever you like, and report a success story on our Facebook fan page for others.

How to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 3GS, 3G on Basebands 05.14.02 and 05.15.04 Using PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition

Step 1: You need “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition” and Firmware 3.2.2 file as well as iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1, you can find the links below.

Step 2: Run PwnageTool and from the Menu choose expert mode. On Next screen, click the Device you want to Jailbreak. Browse and point to the iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 you downloaded in Step 1.

44831-500

  • If PwnageTool fails to recognize the iOS file, follow these steps:
    • Create a “Pwnage” Folder on your desktop to make things easy. Copy the Downloaded “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition” file, the iOS file.
    • Download this file from here. Extract the content of this file, and move the files to “Pwnage” folder on your desktop (Mirrors for iPhone 3GS file, iPhone 3G file, Big Thanks to Jeffrey Corliss for this, from our Facebook Fan Page)
    • Now, right click on PwnageTool app and from the list choose Show Package Details
    • Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/
    • Copy and paste the iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a.bundle from the Pwnage folder on your desktop into the FirmwareBundles folder.
    • Now go ahead with the normal procedure and your iOS firmware file should be recognized by the PwnageTool.
    • Thanks to Anonymous for sending this in…

Step 3: Now when you see the dialogue box, asking if you want to Update to iPad Baseband, hit Yes!

44838-500

  • You will be asked to browse for iOS 3.2.2 for the baseband 06.15.00. Point to the iOS 3.2.2 file you downloaded in step 1.

44839-500

  • Next, choose General as the option and leave the rest as it is.

44843-500

  • On next scree, click Activate iPhone and leave the rest as it is. If you want you can enable other features but they can affect the performance of your iDevice.

44844-500

  • Click back arrow to move to the menu, and hit BUILD to create the custom firmware file.

44851-500

Step 4: Now let PwnageTool do the magic for you and create the Custom Firmware File with the new Baseband 06.15.00.

Step 5: Once you have the Custom Firmware file ready, Put your device into DFU mode or let PwnageTool help you with that.

44856-500

44858

Step 6: Connect to iTunes and Restore your Device using the Cooked firmware file. This should also Hacktivate your device, so once you have a fully restored device you will notice the new baseband 06.15.00 in your Settings Menu.

Step 7: You can use the Ultrasn0w guide posted here to unlock your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G.

Final Step: Share it, like it and make sure not to update your device ever without talking to me or exploring this site for answers.

Enjoy the unlocked iPhone 3GS and 3G on your new baseband 06.15.00. Talk to us on Facebook fan page and we’ll try to guide through the whole process.

Hey there, everything worked except for the fact that my baseband still shows 05.15.04. What could be wrong?

  • Ray

Got 05.15.04 and locked iphone and got this tutorial. I’ve done this (creating custom ipsw with ipad etc) but then I didn’t jailbreak from pwnage tool after creating a new ipsw and instead just restore from iTunes. It worked, however I didnt get baseband 06.15.00 but got bb 05.15.04 still in ABOUT, but it’s now unlocked. No need to use ultrasnow from cydia.

I did the jailbreak as usual after that and it’s still unlocked.

So i got unlocked iphone 3g with bb 05.15.04 and it’s unlocked with jailbreak now

You probably have a factory unlocked iphone :)

Hi, I went through the steps exactly as mentioned. Changed to DFU mode, and custom restored using the IPSW file created during the process. However, once my iPhone rebooted, the modem firmware is still 05.15.04. I’m on 4.2.1(8C148).

    Please help. Thanks

There is something I don;t understand:

I have a 3GS which I guess was unblocked previously. I followed the steps without any success changeing the BB from 05.14.02. I noticed some discrepancies during the procedure:

    1) I dont get the custom logos options.
    2) All re-enable functions are in grey.

I flushed with the custom 4.1 firmware but BB was still on 05.14.02. Any help

Nice job guys.  Went rather well once I got the DFU timing right.

  • alx

Why am I not asked to upgrade to the iPad baseband?  I have an iPhone 3G with iOS 4.2.1 and bb 5.15.04.

  • Anonymous

Make sure you are using the correct
    Redsn0w version

  • alx

I’m using Pwnage Tool.  I tried several times to follow this procedure and I’ve never seen the warning on step 3.  Redsn0w’s latest version says my iPhone is not compatible, probably because it’s still using iOS 4.2.1 and bb 5.15.04.

I downloaded the iPad 3.2.2 7b500 and iPhone 4.2.1 8C148 restore ipsw files on my desktop and I use the option+restore in iTunes to restore with the custom ipsw created from Pwnage Tool.  The iPhone boot with the pineapple logo and Cydia is installed.

What am I doing wrong, and what Redsn0w version should I use?

I thought I had to install the iPad base band before I could use Redsn0w.  Am I correct on that?

    Thanks for your reply!

Follow this guide… dont do anything else.. Carefully follow everything: http://www.techsliver.com/pc-users-unlock-guide-iphone-3gs-3g-redsn0w-096b5/

  • alx

I followed that guide, even if I’m on MAC, not PC.  Everything went well until Redsn0w tried to fetch the iPad baseband (which is the step right after going into DFU mode).  At that point, Redsn0w just shuts down for no apparent reason.  I retried several times with the same result.  Rebooted the MacBook Pro and retried but it keeps shutting down.  I’ve already downloaded the iPad bb (3.2.2), maybe there’s another way for Redsn0w to fetch the iPad bb that is already on my Desktop instead of going for the Apple servers (I presume).

    Thanks!

  • alx

Did I hit a dead end or what?

Can you find a PC and try the same thing on it and get our of this misery ;) ask a friend or something!!

Hi I followed the instructions clearly to unlock iphone3gs 4.1 baseband 05.14.02 and when I was in the DFU mode and connected to itunes to upgrade it, it upgraded to 5.0.1 and firmware 05.16.05 and now i cannot unlock it anymore, can you pls. guide!!!!

  • Anonymous

    You’re welcome!

  • Whosgoingmyway

Sorry, if this has been covered before. I’m a newbie to unlocking and not a techie and so far it
didn’t work out so well. I followed the steps to unlock my iphone 3GS
with 4.2.1. and the 05.15.04 baseband  – all went as outlined until step  5 after which my phone froze. I did some research figured out I needed the tiny umbrella thing – did that and it kick started it again. Since then I have just left it – the goal was to get it working while I was overseas, but I gave up. Now I tried to reactivate my account with my old carrier and it won’t pick up the signal – searching….- they have told me that I need to upgrade the software on the phone and itunes. Did the itunes, now my computer won’t detect my phone for syncing.
Tried to upgrade the software, but now the phone is not being allowed by the apple store, of course.
So, I find my self in limbo land with a half unlocked/jailbroken phone that I can’t use.
I’m a bit desperate to get this either 1 – back to normal or 2 – completely jailbroken
    Please help! Cheers

  • Anonymous

Ok! If you are on an official carrier, AT&T or whatever, then update your iTunes to latest version and connect your device and wait for it to Sync! Once you see is connected, use the update option from iTunes and update it to latest iOS version available for your device. But this is only if you are on an Official carrier of your iPhone 3GS!

  • Whosgoingmyway

I did that and itunes has downloaded the new software, but then it stops at the verifying device stage and comes up with a message saying:
“The iphone could not be restored. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”

Previous to my attempt at unlocking I was using the same carrier – so that should not be a problem.

The apple help at this point says to update itunes (check) and if I have modified anything i need to get rid of it off my phone and rebuild network information.

Ideally, I would really like to complete the jailbreak since I will be abroad again soon and would like to use different SIM cards, but I’m not sure what I did wrong the first time round…I still have the custom built restore on my desktop from the jailbreak step 5. It was just that it never gave me an option on itunes to find that file and use it to restore and then the whole thing froze.

If its not possible, though, perhaps I need to follow the apple guidelines and take cydia and the loader off my phone?
    Thanks

  • Anonymous

ok after the step 5, once you are in DFU mode, connect to iTunes and you will see Update and Restore buttons! You have to “hold alt + Click restore” (MAC). That’s it, a popup will ask for that custom iOS file! give this a try! you need older itunes to work for an older iOS version!

  • Whosgoingmyway

Ok. Seems like it is so close to working. I am able to select the custom file in itunes, which ends in …custom_restore.ipsw (correct?). Once I have selected that the next message I get from itunes says “iTunes will erase and restore your iphone to iOS 4.2.1 adn will verify the restore with Apple”. The only option here is to cancel or restore.
I press restore, it extracts the software and the comes up with the same message I was encountering before – “The iphone could not be restored. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”

Umm…perhaps it is because I have a new version of iTunes (darn, i resisted upgrading for so long as well…)

    Now what?
Thanks for your help so far :)

  • Whosgoingmyway

The hold alt and click restore was successful in finding the custom file, but then I get the same message from itunes once it gets halfway through the process:
“The iphone could not be restored. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”

    Continued help appreciated!

  • Jawnypants

I went through the whole process with my Iphone 3GS and it WORKED!!! I even checked in Settings and it showed IOS version 4.1 and BB 06:15 .  However, I realized that I had done all this with my “alternate carrier” SIM card inserted, and it wouldn’t recognize it at first.  Went in and out of airplane mode a few times with the card out, and when I inserted it, it worked.   Unfortunately, as soon as the screen timed out to black, the phone went to DFU mode.  I got it back by rebooting a few times, but as soon as the screen went black, back to DFU.  Now it’s just stuck there.  Won’t reboot, and Itunes keeps telling me the update server is down (I don’t believe it, its been a week).

Any advice?  I don’t even think I CAN upgrade to 5.0 now.  What to do?

  • Anonymous

Have you tried kicking it out of Recovery, with either TinyUmbrella or FixREcovery?

  • JennHeuslein

OK maybe I am just blind, but in Step 1 is says: ”You need “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition” and Firmware 3.2.2 file as well as iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1, you can find the links below.” I found the Pwnage Tool download and the iOS 4.2.1 download, but I do not see a link for the Firmware 3.2.2 file.  Where can I find this at?

  • Carreybear

The downloads do not work! and the firmware download is not there! help!
