Expected to follow Samsung’s super-successful flagship SII is the release of the Samsung Galaxy SIII. The electronics and technology blog SlashGear has reported some details concerning the device, as well as it’s possible release time. The source of this news is South Korean ETNews which further cites eyewitness ‘insiders’ as its source. Of course, like with any other rumours, these early ones can’t exactly be relied on but are rather interesting nonetheless. Read on for details.

According to the aforementioned insiders, the highly anticipated smartphone will not be launched at the Mobile World Congress (from 27th February to 1st March). Like the previous device, SII, which was launched in May-June of 2011 the SIII will likely see a May release. The Galaxy SII is 8.49mm thick- the world’s slimmest dual-core smartphone as advertised- but the Galaxy SIII might just go one step ahead. Soon we might see Samsung rolling out the world’s slimmest ‘quad-core’ smartphone. As reported, at it’s thinnest point the SIII will be ONLY 7 mm thick. It won’t be 7 mm uniformly though, because typically a familiar bump near the bottom of the phone will accommodate networking components. For visualization purposes, imagine a Motorola Droid Razr which is just a point millimeter thicker.

The smartphone will also sport Android 4.0. Aside from an ultra-slim profile, the smartphone also packs some really cool but not unpredictable features. A frontal camera ranging from 8 to 12 MP, a rear camera boasting around 2 MP, Super AMOLED Plus Display and a Quad-core processor alongside LTE compatibility are some of these. Other rumours say that a 2 GB RAM will allow for multitasking.

Although the average user might just race to buy this smartphone once it’s released, perhaps smartphone manufacturers should be focusing on things other than making their smartphone the ‘slimmest’. Being owner of the slimmest device out their gives owners some pretty exclusive bragging rights but is that all there is to it? Longer-lasting battery is an area that needs some more work, and a great chunk of users would happily add a few millimeters to their phones in exchange for better battery life and improved hardware components.
