According to Business Insider, renowned iOS hacker George ‘Geohot’ Hotz, is back in the world of hacking. For those who are new to the world of jailbreaking and hacking, Geohot is the hacker responsible for unlocking the first ever iPhone and hence allowing it to be used with other wireless carriers, contrary to what Apple and AT&T had intended.

He is also known for developing and releasing jailbreak tools such as Limera1n. Noted for his ‘jailbreak’ of the PlayStation 3, he was subsequently sued by Sony and left the community to work for the social network Facebook, in an as yet unknown capacity.
A brilliant hacker, Geohot has reportedly quit Facebook now. According to Business Insider, he was seen taking part in a ‘hack-athon’ named Backplane. Odd as it is, this hack-athon was funded by the popular artist Lady Gaga. During this, Geohot built an app which allowed users to see where their Facebook friends were, on a map, at any given time. This was done by extracting API information and then programming that into the location data. A gender filter was also included. However, he lost this competition.
If Geohot is indeed back, it is very exciting news. An exceptionally talented hacker, Geohot is sure to bring lots more to the community. He can not, however, jailbreak any Sony console ever again, following an out-of-court settlement reached with Sony after the aforementioned lawsuit. Jailbreaking iOS devices has not been deemed illegal yet, thankfully, and perhaps we shall be seeing some cool update from the hacker soon
