Apple’s native YouTube app, pretty much unchanged since iOS 1.0, is hardly exciting and does not have much to offer. Many attempts have been made to remedy this, but we feel that it is ProTube that has finally done it. Developer Jonas Gessner has released version 1.2 of his app, which is surely a commendable substitute for the native iOS app.

The app has some great features. Via ProTube you can browse videos like you normally would, of course, but it offers a lot more. You can watch videos in HD (High Quality) or SD (Standard Quality). ProTube allows you to stream 720p HD videos almost instantly, without having to wait ages for a video to buffer. To make loading even faster, ProTube has a neat little trick; it lets you block ads. Users can also like/dislike videos, comment on them and view recommended videos how YouTube originally intended them to be viewed. Additionally, you can share videos, add them to playlists, manage your YouTube account and even download videos!

Yes, ProTube has ended the wait, and users finally have the option to download videos straight from YouTube. The amount of videos you can download is unlimited, and you can download multiple videos simultaneously. You won’t have to wait for one video to finish downloading to be able to download the next one. Once a video has been downloaded, this amazing app also lets you transfer that straight into your ‘Videos’ app. If you do not wish to download a video, you also have the option of downloading mp3 audio. Basically it lets you listen to music whenever you want to and also lets you watch videos offline, or in areas with no connectivity. The progress, speed and remaining time of files being downloaded is also shown. Once files are downloaded ProTube stores them in a file manager, and you can rename, move, or transfer them to your PC later on. Videos can be mailed through the native mail app, and they can be added to camera roll.

As expected, ProTube also supports AirPlay meaning you can stream videos that you have downloaded to your television set. Portrait and Landscape orientation are supported too.
Along with all the things ProTube brings, it also has a beautiful User Interface, which shows size, data length and a thumbnail. ProTube directly connects to the mobile website of YouTube so you not only get the get the well crafted interface of that site, but also a ton of other features that are meticulously integrated into the app’s design.

ProTube works with both iOS 4 and iOS 5. For $1.49, you can get this fantastic little app that the developer claims is “how Apple’s YouTube app really should be.” Of course, you will need a jailbroken device if you do want ProTube. For an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak, follow these instructions. Once your device is jailbroken you can get the app from Cydia’s repo Big Boss, after which an icon on your home screen will let you open and actually enjoy YouTube.
