Install The Official CyanogenMod 9 Nightly Builds for the Galaxy S III [How To]

Since the Samsung Galaxy S III was released back in May, the device has been talked about a lot and a lot of work has been done on it already. The device was rooted, sight unseen, and then this root was followed up with a CF Root. The latest progress made is in regards with what is perhaps the most popular ROM out there – CyanogenMod.

Props to an XDA developer XpLoDWilD for it is thanks to him that we now have the official CyanogenMod 9 nightlies on the latest device by Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy S III. This will enable people to get their hands on the vanilla Android pie without any sort of interference from the Korean company itself.

For those who are as yet unaware, the CyanogenMod 9 ROMs are based on Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich). The difference is that they do not come with the TouchWiz UI that is originally present in the Samsung device. When users download and subsequently install nightly builds for the Samsung Galaxy S III users will not only be able to take advantage of a number of improvements and optimizations but also the vanilla flavor of Android.

Before you go about installing the ROM, please note that while it works immensely well there are a few snags that you will have to put up with. For one FM Radio is not supported. You can get Spirit FM from the Google Play Store instead. Two things that don’t have workarounds are that the LED is not lit when you charge your phone and trying to use flash while snapping pictures causes issues.

Some users will also find that the phone will refuse to wake up if they try to do so using the volume keys. It won’t recognize key presses while it is in sleep mode. If you are willing to put up with this in order to get your hands on CM9, check out the guide below.

Also note that this is not official software and installing it on your device will void your warranty. Proceed if you’re okay with that.
