Users who updated their HTC Sensation, Sensation XE and Sensation 4G to the official OTA ICS 4.0.3 update ended up with their HBOOT upgraded to 1.27.000 and with S-On, they were stuck with the official stock rom. The easiest and more user friendly way to S-Off HTC Sensation on older HBoot versions is the Revolutionary tool. However, once an S-On device has been updated to the latest HBoot i.e. 1.27.0000, there was no way to downgrade the HBoot and use the Revolutionary tool.
That however has now changed with an XDA Developer member coming up with the Juopunutbear S-OFF tool. The whole process is quite tricky and interesting at the same time and requires patience but eventually does the job.
As usual, TechSliver is not responsible for any damage done to your device during the process. This is a verified procedure and if followed correctly ensures a safe S-Off for HTC Sensation.
Juopunutbear Prerequisites:
* Be unlocked using the HTCdev bootloader unlock.
* Be rooted (have superuser and/or an unsecured boot image installed)
* Have a spare microSD card or back up all contents of your SDcard
* Have fastboot and adb drivers installed and working (windows)
* Have usb debugging enabled
* Have a length of insulated wire of sufficient length to join the contact points for your device (paperclip)
As you can see one of the requirements for the S-Off is root and for that you need to follow the steps mentioned below.
How To Root HTC Sensation on HBoot 1.27.0000:
Once you have unlocked the bootloader on your ICS Upgraded Sensation 4.0.3 with HBOOT 1.27.0000 and Firmware 3.32, you can flash a custom recovery using the two methods mentioned below. One requires Android SDK tool kit and the other requires HTC One X All-In-One Tool kit V1.0.
Method 1:
How To Install CWM Recovery on HTC Sensation (Using Android SDK)
Download the CWM recovery zip file to your PC.
Rename the file to ‘recovery.img‘ (This is just to make it easier to type in while flashing through fastboot)
Now copy the ‘recovery.img‘ file to the folder where fastboot.exe is located on your PC. (The path is likely to be - C:\android-sdk-windows\tools)
Now go to Settings > Power > Fast boot. Uncheck the Fast boot option.
Once done, reboot your phone in bootloader mode by holding the volume down button and pressing the power button. After a few seconds your phone will boot into a screen that gives you several options, including fastboot and recovery.
Now reboot to fastboot mode.
Connect your HTC Sensation to your PC via USB cable.
On your PC, go to the folder where fastboot.exe is located (Check path in Step 3). While holding the shift key down on your PC keyboard, right click inside the folder, and Select “Open Command Window Here“.
This should open up a command prompt window or DOS prompt.
Now type in the following command in the DOS window:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Press Enter and this will initiate the flashing of the new recovery to your device.
Once the flashing is complete, select ’Bootloader’ in the main hboot menu, and then scroll to Recovery and select it using the Power button.
Your phone should now reboot into the new Clockworkmod Recovery.
Method 2:
How To Install CWM Recovery on HTC Sensation (Using HTC One X All-In-One Toolkit)
- Register on HTCdev.com website, choose Unlock Bootloader, choose your device and follow the instructions.
- Connect your HTC Sensation to pc and make sure you’re in the charging mode and your check USB development or debugging option.
- Extract the HTC One X All-In-One Toolkit V1.0 to the Disktop.
- Run the One X.exe application.
- Rename the CWM recovery to CWM5827, then copy it to HTC One X All-In-One Toolkit folder/Data folder/recoveries and replace the one inside.
- Flash the CWM recovery using the toolkit.
Now that we have flashed CWM Recovery, we can flash the SuperSU application that will give us root privileges.
How to flash SuperSU.zip and root HTC Sensation:
- Download the file SuperSU.zip from here.
- Connect your phone to your pc in USB data mode and copy the downloaded file in the root folder of your SD card.
- Reboot your phone in Bootloader mode, from there navigate to Recovery using volume up and volume down and using power button to select.
- You will enter Clockwork Recovery.
- Create a Backup by entering Backup and Restore menu.
- Select *install from zip* and select the SuperSU.zip file.
- Choose *Yes – install SuperSU.zip*.
- Once done, go back and select Reboot.
- Your phone is now rooted.
Now just use the Juopunutbear tool and follow the steps to S-Off HTC Sensation. Visit the original thread on XDA forums or follow the steps mentioned below that are taken from the thread.
“NOTE: This is based on an ICS Upgraded Sensation 4.0.3 with HBOOT 1.27.0000 and Firmware 3.32.”
Make sure you have at least 50% battery life for this and some free time. I also recommend a paperclip extended out with some insulation tape over the whole thing except for the tips (leave about 1CM free each end) for the wire trick.
1 - Backup and Format your SD Card
Easiest thing to do as this is essential for the program to work and you wouldn’t want to risk your content.
2 - Restore to Stock 3.32 Rooted ROM
I did this because I was getting an error message only 1 other user reported and I believe it was because I was using a custom ROM (LeeDroid) with a kernel based on 3.32 from a different ROM. I kept getting an Segmentation error, see below.

It is not 100% necessary to wipe and start fresh but I expect most other users to be changing ROM’s after gaining S-OFF (because you can change your CID). As I said at the start, it’s based on my own experience and I always prefer to start fresh with a new ROM unless upgrading. Just flash this in Recovery as you would any normal ROM. I also suggest downloading and running SuperWipe before hand.
Here’s the download link for the stock rom.
ALTERNATIVELY – Root your current ROM (again) with the steps mentioned above.
3 – Flash boot.img from Stock 3.32 Rooted ROM in Fastboot
As you know, if you flash a ROM with a HTC Unlocked bootloader, it has to be based on the 3.32 firmware and some ROM’s you flash won’t boot because of this so extract it from the above ZIP and flash it in fastboot (ROM should still boot but pays to be safe).
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash boot /path/to/boot.img
fastboot reboot
4 – Download Juopunutbear S-OFF
Download link for Juopunutbear S-Off.
5 – Connect phone over USB with debugging enabled
Should be on by default but if not, go to Settings > Develop Option > USB Debugging
6 – Run Juopunutbear S-OFF
Let this run through it’s normal procedure, you will see some prompts on your phones screen about X application being granted superuser permissions, this is normal. After about 15-30 seconds your phone will reboot and boot to the Juopunutbear screen (I believe it’s a recovery like loader). DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR USB CABLE!
7 – Use Wire-Trick to obtain S-OFF
This is the fun part as it makes it really seem like hacking. When requested by the application, use the suggested paperclip to join the SD Card casing to the connector as in the image:

This initial confusion myself was that you had to hold it for an awfully accurate 1.75 seconds but that was my mistake. Here’s how I got it to work.
NOTE: The below will repeatedly show on screen until you make contact, then it will say Waiting Device (as it reboots).

Now, that’s it and you are done. It will reboot into Bootloader and you will see this:

Once done, you can now tweak your phone in every possible way. Do try out Android Revolution HD ROMs by Mike1986 as they are best custom roms available for HTC Sensation, Sensation XE and Sensation 4G. You can follow the step by step guide on how to flash the custom roms by heading over to this link. The S-Off also allows you to downgrade your HBoot if you wish to. Just download the HBboot zip file and place it in the root folder of your SD card. Reboot your phone into bootloader and it will ask permission to perform update. Navigate using the volume keys and the power key to select. Once the process is finished, reboot your phone and your bootloader version will be changed.
Hopefully, this compilation of guides will help you. If you are an HTC Sensation user and haven’t updated your phone to the latest official ICS update, go through our extensive guide on how to S-OFF and root HTC Sensation on older HBoot versions.
Update: To improve HTC Sensation battery times, you can undervolt the processor by using Undervoltage Installer. Head over to the thread to download and install the mod on your rooted HTC Sensation.
