Apple’s iOS 5 was released back in November of 2011. Ever since then users have been facing issues regarding battery drainage but also they have been enjoying many new features that iOS 5 brought along like Notification Center. From the time it was released, Apple Developers have been trying to figure out the underlying cause of battery issue and when iOS 5.0.1 was released, there was hope that it will eradicate the annoying problem. Sadly that never happened and since then we haven’t seen any official updates released for public.

On the other hand, Apple did release three beta updates for selected for selected few who paid to get their hands on the latest software releases from Apple. iOS 5.1 beta 3 was seeded to registered developers on January 10, 2012. It is not yet known what changes the final version of this firmware will come with. Rumors are spreading that Apple will publicly release iOS 5.1 alongside iPad 3 in March.

“We today discovered that Apple published eleven new profiles for various iPhone-operators. These files are compatible with iOS 5.1 and are set for release on March 9. This could indicate that iOS 5.1 will be released around that date, is will be available for the following devices; iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 3G/4G, iPad, and iPad 2.”
Although no major changes or features are expected from the iOS 5.1 release as Apple is concentrating on fixing bugs, improved Siri functionality is something we can be sure of in the next big iOS update. References to iPad 3 and Facebook integration have also been discovered in the last beta of iOS 5.1.
A heads up for jailbreak users, make sure to save iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs if you are currently jailbroken on said firmware. Apple will surely patch the Corona exploit used to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 untethered on iPhone 4S and iPad. This exploit is also used to apply an untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and the original iPad.
